An Invitation from Upland Police Chief Darren Goodman
Greetings Upland Community Coalition on Equity, Inclusion, and Humanity:
For several months, we have collaborated on ways to elevate our Police Department and its standing within our community amidst the backdrop of national social division, civil unrest, and growing anti-law enforcement sentiment. Understanding with absolute certainty that more people support us than not, we collectively chose to avoid the assumption that no problems exist simply because our department has not been at the center of controversy. To be forward thinking and moving as a community, we must look for growth opportunities during the good times and bad. Never settling for the status quo, or “this is the way it has always been” mentality. Our coalition consists of trusted community members, primarily from the faith-based arena, and a few department members. Through our meetings and extensive discussions, one objective that materialized was to develop ways we can prevent our community from becoming as divided as other places throughout the nation, and to focus on ways we can grow from the tragedies of other organizations, despite not having experienced similar events. After several meetings of very open, honest discussions, we drilled down to a simple concept to help transcend police/community divisions, grow organizationally, and create a sense of oneness in the City of Upland: Establishing Shared Values.
All too often organizations craft value statements that include catchy phrases yet fail to ensure that critical stakeholders have had a say in producing those values. We need to do better than that and we will. All of you are critical stakeholders, as you are the heart and soul of this community. We need our community’s trust and support to maintain the legitimacy necessary to effectively provide services. To produce shared values requires the monumental, but important task of listening without being offended and seeking to achieve common ground, while fully understanding that everyone cannot have everything they want. Listening to more people allows a greater likelihood of increased credibility and trust.
To listen to our community, we must get their feedback to establish shared values. I need each of you to share our Coalition’s concept, overarching goal, and initial starting point, with all your congregations and other social networks in Upland so that we can get at least 500 participants in our survey. As you know, the surveys will be administered by Human Values Center and personal information will be kept completely confidential. The data we need to improve is contingent on participation, so please encourage folks to take 10 minutes to complete the survey. Here is the link to the survey: CLICK THERE => UPLAND PD Values Survey
Thank you for supporting our effort to move our organization forward, provide better support to our employees, and better service to our community.
